Happy Nowruz

Nowruz, also known as the Persian New Year, is an ancient festival celebrated by millions of people around the world, particularly in Iran, Central Asia and other regions influenced by Persian culture.

The word "Nowruz" itself means "new day" in Persian, marking the beginning of the spring equinox and symbolising renewal, rejuvenation, and the triumph of light over darkness.

This joyous celebration has roots dating back thousands of years, originating from Zoroastrian traditions and later adopted by various cultures and religions, including Islam and Christianity.

Nowruz typically falls on or around March 21st, coinciding with the astronomical beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere (this year Nowruz falls on 20th March at 3.06am GMT).

During Nowruz, families gather to observe rituals that signify the transition into the new year. These rituals often include spring cleaning, decorating homes with flowers and colourful decorations, preparing special dishes like Sabzi Polo (herb rice) and Haft-Seen (a traditional table setting with symbolic items), and visiting friends and relatives to exchange gifts and well-wishes.

Nowruz embodies themes of hope, renewal, and the spirit of unity, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural pride among communities worldwide. It serves as a reminder to embrace change, cherish traditions, and look forward to a brighter future filled with prosperity, happiness, and peace.

The traditional Persian dish enjoyed on this day of festivities is ‘Sabzi Polo’ which is a rice dish infused with fresh herbs and saffron.
